An Anterior Bite Plane is a removable orthodontic and therapeutic appliance primarily covering the anterior teeth (incisors and canines), widely utilized in dentistry for managing temporomandibular disorders (TMD), nocturnal bruxism (teeth grinding), and deep overbite conditions.

Its fundamental mechanism involves creating a physical barrier that elevates the posterior teeth, intentionally disengaging their occlusal contact. This disengagement reduces excessive contraction of masticatory muscles such as the masseter and temporalis, thereby alleviating muscle fatigue, tension, and associated pain. Additionally, it guides mandibular repositioning, promoting optimal alignment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and relieving intra-articular pressure caused by malocclusion or parafunctional habits.

Constructed most commonly from acrylic resin, the appliance features a flat occlusal surface that covers either maxillary or mandibular anterior teeth. When worn, only the anterior teeth make contact with the plane, maintaining a 2-4mm vertical separation between posterior teeth to prevent damaging occlusal forces. It is often used as a diagnostic or short-term therapeutic tool before more definitive treatments like orthodontics or restorative dentistry. Regular adjustments by dental professionals ensure proper fit and effectiveness, minimizing potential side effects such as anterior tooth sensitivity or temporary changes in speech.
