Its core function is to counteract the natural tendency of teeth to shift back to their original positions, a phenomenon caused by residual tension in periodontal ligaments and oral muscle memory. Unlike removable retainers, which rely on patient compliance, fixed retainers provide 24/7 retention, making them particularly effective for individuals with a high risk of relapse, such as those with severely misaligned teeth or a history of shifting.
The placement process, performed by an orthodontist after braces removal, is relatively quick (15-30 minutes) and involves minimal discomfort, though some patients may experience temporary tongue sensitivity.
