Dental flexible denture is a removable partial denture (RPD) type made from soft, flexible materials-typically thermoplastic resins like nylon or Valplast. Unlike rigid acrylic or metal-framework RPDs, its flexibility lets it adapt to gum and jaw movements, making it a popular choice for patients seeking comfort and a natural look.
Its main advantages include exceptional comfort: the soft material reduces irritation to gums and eliminates the "bulky" feel of rigid dentures. It also has better aesthetics-being translucent, it blends with natural gum tissue, and often avoids visible metal clasps (using hidden retention methods instead). Additionally, it's lightweight and easy to adjust, with lower risk of breaking than acrylic dentures. However, it has limitations: it's less durable than metal or rigid acrylic (prone to stretching over time), can't support heavy chewing forces (not ideal for patients with extensive tooth loss), and is harder to repair if damaged.
For maintenance, clean it daily with a soft-bristle brush and mild, non-abrasive denture cleaner-avoid hot water (it can warp the thermoplastic material) and harsh chemicals. Remove it overnight and soak in a specialized flexible denture solution (regular solutions may damage the material). Regular dental check-ups (every 6 months) help adjust fit and check for wear; with proper care, it typically lasts 2-4 years. It's best for patients with minor tooth loss, those sensitive to rigid materials, or as a temporary solution.
